Post Diwali Cleaning: Here’s how to get it right

If you are unsure about cleaning your home after a grand Diwali celebration, then just follow the below-mentioned tips for post Diwali cleaning at home.

Remove all the decorations

For Diwali, more than half of the Indians decorated their home with several decor items, isn’t it? So now when the festival is over, it’s time to remove all of the decor items. The post Diwali cleaning must always start with removing all the decorations. Remove all the decorative item such as flower garlands hanging over the door or windows, paper strings, lanterns, string lights, remove diyas and etc, before you start the real clean up.

Broom the home

After removing all the decorations, it is time to broom your home thoroughly. Broom away all the clutter that has been accumulated in your home while you were busy celebrating and having fun. Also, remember to broom away the rangoli, so that it doesn’t scatter much throughout the floor.

Mopping

After brooming your home, it is very important to mop it thoroughly. Mopping is an essential part of post Diwali cleaning because your floors will be stained with oil fallen from the diyas. And if you have burnt crackers on your roof or just outside the home (not road) then cleaning those stains is also essential. Therefore, you must mop your home really well.

Removing oil stains from floors

To remove the oils stains created by diyas, first blot the oil so that the oiliness is reduced, and then use your floor cleaner to saturate the stain. You can also use a natural ingredient like vinegar to saturate the oil stains. After letting the vinegar/cleaner solution saturate the oil stain, scrub it using a cleaning cloth or a scrubbing brush, and then you’ll see the stains are gone! Then raise the area, and let it dry.

Remove cracker stains

Now, it is time to clean up the most vital stains made by the crackers. The best way to clean the stains made by crackers is by using a basic and widely used agent for cleaning, and that is the bleaching powder. All you need to do is spread some bleaching powder over the cracker stains and leave it for 2 to 3 hours. Then wash it off thoroughly; you’ll see the stains are gone because bleaching powder is very efficient in removing cracker stains.

Best ways to remove cracker stains from floor

Apart from noise and air pollution, there is another factor that is inevitable when you celebrate Diwali to the fullest; and that is, cracker stains. Yes, there are many other kind of stains that your floors may sustain during Diwali, such as oil stains and food stains, but cracker stain is the strongest stain, which cannot be erased easily. It might be difficult to erase cracker stains, but it isn’t impossible. We are giving you five ways to remove cracker stains, so that you can include and utilize them in your post Diwali cleaning task. The five ways are as follows:

Kerosene: The best method of cleaning the post Diwali cracker stains is by using Kerosene. Just wet a cloth with Kerosene and wipe the affected area on the floor. You can also directly spray over the cracker stains, and then wipe it with a cloth. You will see the stains are getting removed easily, because kerosene is very effective over burn-stains.

Lemon: If your floors have sustained tiny bits of cracker stains, then you can easily wipe them off using lemon. You can either squeeze lemon juice over the burnt stains, or mix it with water and apply over the stains. The acidic nature of lemon can easily erase the cracker stains. But remember, it will only work on small stains. To remove bigger stains, you might need sacks of lemon.

Spirit: Spirit is considered as effective as Kerosene (though kerosene is much better), so you can undoubtedly buy spirit for post Diwali cleaning of cracker stains. All you need to do is wet a cloth with spirit, and use it to scrub over the cracker stains.

Simply water: Sometimes water can do wonders in cleaning off the cracker stains. So, what you can do is apply or clean the area with water, before you try out or experiment with some other stain removal technique. Just pour some water in the area that has burnt marks, and let the area stay damp for a night. Then again spray some water in the morning over the stains, and finally clean the floor. If not completely, but the burn-stains would reduce a bit.

Over to you

While enjoying this festival of lights, none of us have even thought about post Diwali cleaning; did you? It is very obvious that no one would remember or care about post Diwali cleaning while celebrating the festival of lights. But once the celebrations are over, we realize that the home, stairs and walkways badly need cleaning. Getting rid of cracker stains, colors of rangoli, removing flowers etc takes lots of efforts and you may not feel like cleaning on your own.
