Finally,\nremember to wear safety glasses and gloves at all times, as well as ear protection\nif you\u2019re going to be using a table saw yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Sizing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step\nis cutting your boards to size. Use the measuring tape and a pair of\nprofessional calipers from <a href=\"https:\/\/au.rs-online.com\/web\/c\/test-measurement\/linear-measurement\/calipers\/\">RS Components<\/a> to make exact and reliable measurements. You can then\neither cut them yourself using a table saw or head to your local hardware store\nif you don\u2019t have access to one. For a set of 4-foot long shelving, you\u2019ll need\naround three strips of wooden board cut to around 48 inches long (or 4 foot) by\n17 inches wide. For this build, you\u2019ll also need four 60-inch legs, six 48 inch\nsupports and nine 13 inch cross supports to build the framework for the\nshelving units themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Building the back<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by\nlaying down two of your leg pieces in parallel and mark a line just down from\nthe top of each shelf where you\u2019ll want your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/how-to-plans\/how-to\/g2530\/how-to-build-garage-storage-shelves-for-cheap\/\">garage shelves<\/a> to sit. Position the first piece like the rung of a\nladder beneath this line, checking that it sits flush with the legs. Next, fix\nscrews into each corner, staggering their placement and marketing your progress\nas you go. Screw each \u2018rung\u2019 of your unit into place, making sure they are at\nleast 16 inches apart and you\u2019ll have your backing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Finishing off<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Attach your\ncross braces to the ends of each piece and add a centre support to the middle.\nPlace the last 48-inch pieces on top of these supports and screw everything\ntogether. All that\u2019s left to do now is attach the final two legs and slot the\nshelving sheets themselves in place, nailing them down to keep them sturdy.
